JAKARTA – The PKS Central Executive Board has officially nominated Anies Baswedan and Sohibul Iman for the Jakarta Governor Election 2024. This was announced by PKS President Ahmad Syaikhu on Tuesday, June 25, 2024. The PKB also agreed with this pairing.

The duo of Anies Baswedan and Sohibul Iman is known to be no ordinary team. Both have an impressive track record. Both hold doctorates and have served as rectors.

Anies Baswedan was born on May 7, 1969. He initially started his career as a lecturer and academic. He served as the Rector of Paramadina University for eight years and initiated the Indonesia Teaches movement.

He then participated in the presidential candidate convention organized by the Democrat Party in 2013. In October 2014, he was appointed by President Jokowi as the Minister of Education and Culture in the Working Cabinet.

Later, Anies and Sandiaga Uno were endorsed by Gerindra and PKS in the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election. They defeated Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, with Anies serving as governor from 2017 to 2022.

He completed his undergraduate degree at the Faculty of Economics, UGM, in 1995. He then obtained his master's from the University of Maryland in 1998, and earned his doctorate from Northern Illinois University, Department of Political Science, in 2005.

Meanwhile, Sohibul Iman was born on October 5, 1965. He served as the President of PKS from August 10, 2015, until October 5, 2020.

Sohibul was the Deputy Speaker of the DPR-RI from 2013-2014, replacing Anis Matta who resigned because he became the President of PKS replacing Luthfi Hasan Ishaaq. He completed his master's and doctorate degrees in Japan.

In May 2004, after completing his Ph.D., Sohibul Iman returned to Indonesia and resumed his work as a researcher at BPPT.

Throughout his career, he was twice offered the chance to manage Paramadina University, owned by Nurcholish Madjid or Cak Nur. He declined the first offer but eventually accepted the second with enthusiasm.

After Cak Nur passed away, in 2006, Iman was entrusted to become the acting rector of Paramadina University. At that time, Sohibul Iman decided to leave his position at BPPT and as a civil servant to fully focus on his dedication to the campus.

Iman’s decision to no longer be a civil servant was well received by his colleagues at PKS. Eventually, Iman was invited back to rejoin PKS.

Now, the PKS Central Executive Board officially endorses the duo of Anies Baswedan and Sohibul Iman for the Jakarta Governor Election 2024. Both figures are doctors and former Rectors of Paramadina University.
